Get involved

The mission of diversifying and decolonising economics necessarily requires a team effort and we are always looking for motivated people who want to join us. Whether you have been following Diversifying and Decolonising Economics (D-Econ) for a while or are new to the organisation, we invite you to join one of our working groups (WGs), each focusing on specific areas of our mission. Below you can find brief descriptions of each WG’s aims and projects. You are welcome to be part of as many WGs as you wish!  If you are a student, scroll down to find out how you can get involved.

Join D-Econ Team

D-Econ is open to students, academics, and the general public with a commitment to D-Econ’s mission. To become a member of the D-Econ team, or if you have any questions about joining D-Econ, contact Devika Dutt at info@d-econ.org with subject “Join D-Econ”, stating the following information:

  • Your name
  • Which working group(s) you would like to join (see below)
  • A very short statement specifying why you would like to join D-Econ

Please note that this is not a paid opportunity.

D-Econ Working Groups (WGs) currently recruiting members:

  1. Curriculum: This WG aims to promote diversity in the economics curriculum. It works on developing methodologies and resources to support those who desire to provide a decolonised economic education.
  2. Praxis: This is an action oriented WG exploring the question of what decolonising economics really means, and how should we engage with the existing anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, decolonial and post-colonial theory, literature, and practice. It also works on developing guidelines to ensure inclusive and decolonised events and institutions to challenge patriarchal, racist, and imperialist structures and amplify representation and voices of women, scholars of colour, scholars from the Global South, and scholars doing decolonised work.
  3. Blog: This WG focuses on managing and editing the D-Econ blog, which is a collective initiative bringing together contributions from academics and activists who share the vision of decolonisation and diversification of economics.

What is the commitment?

D-Econ works on a voluntary basis and aims to be flexible to individual volunteers’ personal needs. You can be as committed as you like and dedicate as much time as you are able to, but at the minimum we ask that you join regular meetings of your working group and contribute to its activities (usually 1-2 hours every month, but this varies across WGs).

Reading Groups

D-Econ has many exciting projects and initiatives that are taking place. We recognize that many will want to get involved in different ways in some of the work D-Econ is doing. Our suggestion for one of the ways to do this, is to start your own reading group. You could perhaps start with one of the brilliant pieces of work we have suggested in our reading lists. As a potential suggestion, start your first week by taking some time to do some research on the author of the book you have chosen and revel in the plethora of work available from scholars in the Global South, those outside of mainstream economics and those who draw on their lived experiences – as an inspiration for you to question the state of knowledge production.

As you are reading throughout the weeks, be sure to tweet us and share your thoughts on this experience! If you don’t have a group of interested students, scholars, or other interested members of the public that are in close proximity to you, get in touch with us and let us know. We can then try to put you in contact with other others who are interested in forming a reading group who might be in another country. That way you can join a digital reading group with people from all across the globe.

Contact us by email on info@d-econ.org to discuss how you can contribute. You can subscribe to updates with the link to the right.
